Meet The Fly Guy
Hi! I'm Gary Alpert, a Phoenix elementary school teacher of
32 years. Having worked with children for so long, I truly
believe they learn and are motivated best by DOING.
In 1987, I began conducting kid-friendly, hands-on
workshops making things that fly. I spent 23 years teaching
the workshops after school, on weekends and during
summer break. In 2011, I took my show on the road and
started doing workshops full time.
In our workshops, we make paper airplanes, spaceships,
catapult gliders, rocketry, kites, rubber-powered airplanes,
and hot air balloons.
The power of these workshops is that
they are both educational and A LOT of fun.
I plan every workshop according to the needs of the school
or group. If a school needs me to tie in state standards in
science, math, reading or writing, I can do that. If the
workshop is strictly to entertain, I can do that too!
I also teach teachers how to make things that fly while
incorporating grade level state standards into their
curriculum. I'm available for teacher workshops during
professional development or early release days.
outside the box
"Gary communicates the principles of flight in a simple, fun manner. He has a great understanding of how kids think and learn. The kids create and learn while having a wonderful time. Gary has an amazing way of working with kids. He easily has 40 or more kids hanging on his every word. The kids really enjoy making their own flying things, designing them to do just what they want them to do. Working with Gary, the kids gain confidence in building their own flying things. He helps them to think outside the box, and to learn from their mistakes. He doesn't let them give up."
