Workshops Offered
-
Paper airplanes
Make ten different airplanes with paper, cardstock, and styrofoam. Through the process, kids learn about the control surfaces of planes, and the four forces that affect things that fly: thrust, drag, lift and gravity.
-
rubber powered model airplanes
Build a model plane - complete with wings, tail and fuselage - out of balsa wood and glue. Learn about aerodynamics as you wind up the rubber band attached to the propeller and let it fly!
-
kites
Construct kites made of paper or trash bags and wooden dowels while getting a crash course in the history of kite making. Beginner to intermediate options. Excellent workshop for birthday parties!
-
rocketry
Assemble and launch rockets into the sky. Learn Newton's Laws of Motion and the importance of safety when building rockets. Great project for the classroom, extracurricular clubs and private parties.
-
spaceships
Make Zoomerangs, Starships, and Galactic Gliders out of paper plates, cups and straws. Easy to make, easy to fly.
-
hot air baloons
Work as a team to craft a six foot high hot air balloon out of colorful tissue paper. Then watch it soar 200 feet into the air! Great for children 10 years and older as it takes six or seven hours to build.
-
catapult gliders
Design a variety of gliders out of styrofoam and balsa wood. Take them outside, set a child-made shooter in the catapult's hook and fire away.
For Teachers
In addition to working directly with groups of children, I also provide workshops for teachers. I train educators how to teach my workshops to their students while incorporating grade level state standards into their curriculum. I'm available for teacher workshops during professional development or early release days.
It was great!
"I thought Gary did a great job getting down on the kids' level and making the workshop fun! I don't think they even realized that they were actually learning about the nature of aerodynamics because they were so engaged in the activities. The best part is that they can take what they learned and show it to others with nothing more than a piece of paper and some paperclips. We definitely look foward to having The Fly Guy back soon to learn even more about things that fly!"
